TEDxPhilly - Philly Youth Poetry Movement - Youth empowerment & self-sustainable education

TEDxPhilly - Philly Youth Poetry Movement - Youth empowerment & self-sustainable education Tube. Duration : 19.02 Mins.

Philly Youth Poetry Movement's (PYPM) Gregory Corbin and Denice Frohman ask: How do we engage young people? How do we create safe spaces for expression, empowerment and transformation? What does self-sustainable education look like and how can we help young adults become the leaders of tomorrow? PYPM, a volunteer-driven youth poetry organization, works with young people to help them discover their voices through spoken word. Young poets find value in their voices, explore how they fit and don't fit in the world, expose themselves to diverse stories and listen to one another. Corbin explains: "Their stories are classrooms. Their lessons are life experiences. Both are abundant, beautiful chances to change the world." PYPM's slam team won the coveted Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in July 2011. In addition to Corbin and Frohman, PYPM's poets took to the TEDxPhilly stage, delivering exemplary performances. Kai Davis and Chamira Nelson performed "Femininjas" (starting at 9:03) and Alana Gooden presented a powerful solo about speaking for the youth (starting at 15:10). The young performers received standing ovations. phillyyouthpoets.org The 2011 TEDxPhilly conference examined vast interpretations of the theme "The City" on Tuesday, November 8. TEDxPhilly - Rich Medina - Philadelphia: A city that nurtures our creative muscle Video Clips. Duration : 16.02 Mins.

Rich Medina paints Philadelphia as an epic birthplace and 'nurturing mother' for musical expression. After an Ivy League education and a promising start in semi-professional basketball, Medina found himself working in a series of lucrative but unfulfilling corporate jobs. All the while, he felt the pull of music. Finding promise and immense inspiration in Philadelphia's music scene, Medina left his trained profession behind. Though his life in music has taken him around the globe, Medina still calls Philadelphia home and continues to find inspiration in the city that nurtured his creative muscle. Over a two-decade career, Rich Medina has been DJ'ing, producing, writing and creating global music and dance events. From his humble beginnings as a young b-boy-turned-DJ in Lakewood, NJ, to his current status manning the decks as one of the most popular DJ's in Philadelphia and New York, Medina has been taking crowds on a multiethnic sonic journey through hip-hop, house, Afrobeat, funk and soul. www.richmedina.com The 2011 TEDxPhilly conference examined vast interpretations of the theme "The City" on Tuesday, November 8.
