He now directs a cognitive neuroscience laboratory at the UCSF Mission Bay campus, which focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms of memory and attention in humans. In addition to his laboratory, he has recently established and now directs the Neuroscience Imaging Center (NIC) at UCSF, a core facility designed to use the tools of human neurophysiology, notably functional MRI, to study the healthy and impaired brain. It is likely that Adam's extensive scientific background now provides the colors for his nature photography palate. He feels that "both are an exploration of nature, be it the discovery of the organization, complexity or beauty of the brain, a neuron, a waterfall or a sunset; it's all about the art of perception." Gary W. Mathern, MD, is a professor of pediatric neurosurgery at the Mattel Children's Hospital and David Geffen School of Medicine at The University of California, Los Angeles medical center. His clinical practice is in the surgical treatment of children with uncontrolled seizure, and his research interests involve laboratory studies trying to understand the basic mechanisms of seizure generation in the patients he operates on as a way to develop new and better treatments. Among these research interests are studies to understand neuroplasticity after cerebral hemispherectomy the topic of his talk. Dr. Mathern has authored more than 100 papers and book chapters on Pediatric Epilepsy surgery, has received support from the National Institutes of Health for nearly 20 years, and is a recognized international expert in this field.
