On October 18, 2010, members of Dallas' Turtle Creek Chorale joined singers from over 30 area religious institutions and students from Southern Methodist University in a performance titled, A Night For Peace. WIth just three rehearsals to prepare, the 300+ "Partners In Harmony" massed chorus offered a full-length concert, which concluded with Bach's DONA NOBIS PACEM (Grant Us Peace) from his Mass in B Minor. Urban planner Arif Hasan charts the scale of settlement in Pakistan and its consequences. He surprises the audience with statistical evidence that calls for a second look at the population demographic. About the speaker An architect, teacher and social researcher, Arif Hasan has worked diligently to promote urban planning through the Urban Resource Centre. He has worked on various sites in Karachi and has developed successful housing programs including Urban Community program, Hasan Square and the Orangi Upgrading Project. Mr. Hasan has worked on both local and international levels by serving as a consultant to United Nations agencies in hopes of facilitating better building practices among the people of the world. In 1990, Mr. Hasan was awarded the International Year for the Shelterless Memorial Award by the Japanese government, the Prince Claus Award for Urban Heroes in 2000. He also went on to receive the Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan and is an Ashoka Fellow. Opposite to the 'top down' concept of urban design is BETTER BLOCK, founded in Dallas' Oak Cliff by Jason Roberts and Andrew Howard. The Better Block project is a demonstration tool that temporarily re-visions an area to show the potential to create a walkable, vibrant, neighborhood center. The idea and the charrettes to realize it have quickly spread to cities like Memphis, St. Louis, New York, and Boston. National media coverage includes NPR, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
